UK defence tech investment surges to record levels

The United Kingdom is experiencing a significant surge in defence technology investment. In the first nine months of 2026, UK-based defence tech companies raised £776 million in equity funding, more than tripling the previous annual record of £219 million set in 2025. This capital is primarily directed toward startups specializing in autonomous vessels, AI-powered intelligence, counter-drone technology, cybersecurity, and battlefield AI, rather than legacy contractors.

Leading companies in this sector include Cambridge Aerospace, which has raised £445 million for counter-drone and missile interceptor systems, and Kraken Technology Group, which has raised £138 million. Other notable firms include Faculty, Adarga, and Mind Foundry.

This technological boom is also impacting the British real estate market. Property investors and developers are targeting defence and AI firms to occupy office and research spaces, including former financial districts like Canary Wharf in London. There is increasing demand for laboratory and R&D space, particularly within the ‘Golden Triangle’ research cluster encompassing London, Cambridge, and Oxford, as firms seek proximity to universities to attract specialized talent.
