UK Defence Secretary urges emergency preparedness amid rising security risks

British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has urged citizens to maintain emergency supplies at home to increase national resilience. He advised households to keep cash, bottled water, and non-perishable food available in case of disruptions to electricity, electronic banking, or other critical services.

Streeting highlighted various threats facing the United Kingdom, including natural disasters such as floods and wildfires, as well as cyberattacks, terrorism, and risks from hostile states. He emphasized that while citizens should be ‘cautious, not alarmed’, preparedness is a vital component of societal resilience.

In addition to domestic preparedness, Streeting identified Russia and President Vladimir Putin as the greatest security threats to the UK. He noted that the risk of war is currently at its highest level in his lifetime, citing Russia's ‘imperialistic ambitions’ as a constant test for British and NATO defenses. This assessment has contributed to decisions regarding significant, sustained increases in defense spending.
