UK Defense Secretary urges allies to bolster Ukraine's air defense ahead of winter

UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting has called on international allies to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities ahead of winter. Following a visit to Kyiv, Streeting warned that "winter in Ukraine is no longer a season. It is a weapon," noting that Russia intends to target energy infrastructure to force a surrender.

Streeting emphasized the need to mobilize support from approximately 50 countries to transform political commitment into tangible military capabilities, specifically focusing on air defense resources. This comes amid warnings that Ukraine is facing shortages of critical interceptors, including US-made Patriot missiles, which are essential for neutralizing Russian ballistic missiles.

On the domestic front, military officials are urging Ukrainian citizens to prepare for potential long-term power outages and extreme cold. Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the 429th Separate Drone Systems Brigade, advised residents to secure generators, fuel supplies, and heating equipment now, rather than waiting for temperatures to drop to -20°C, as Ukraine's production capacity may not be sufficient to mitigate all risks to the energy grid.
