UK Dementia Research Institute trials smart sensors for home care

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), in collaboration with Imperial College London and funded by LifeArc, is conducting a trial involving over 250 families to test how high-tech sensors can assist dementia patients living at home. The project utilizes a variety of devices, including smart mattresses to track heart rate and breathing, motion sensors to detect nighttime wandering, and wearable items such as smart socks and temperature-monitoring watches to track gait and body temperature.

The goal of the trial is to identify early signs of health changes or physical decline, allowing for medical intervention before a situation becomes a crisis. By monitoring daily routines and movement patterns, the technology aims to reduce preventable hospital visits and provide families with greater peace of mind. While the system does not record audio or video, some participants have expressed concerns regarding data privacy.
