UK Department for Work and Pensions announces new employment and debt recovery measures
The UK government is implementing two major initiatives through the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to reform welfare and employment.
A new scheme targeting young disabled people aged 18 to 24 will provide accelerated access to government-backed job opportunities. Under this program, individuals claiming health or disability benefits will be offered a voluntary job placement just three months after their Work Capability Assessment, significantly reducing the previous 18-month wait. Part of a £2.5 billion investment, the initiative includes mentoring and support for mental health, housing, and finances to help narrow the disability employment gap.
Simultaneously, the government is introducing stricter enforcement measures to recover benefit debts and combat fraud. Starting in October, the DWP will utilize new powers under the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Act 2025 to seize funds directly from bank accounts without a court order for those who fail to settle outstanding debts or agree to repayment plans. In serious cases where debt exceeds £1,000 and there is no essential need for a vehicle, the DWP may also seek court orders to suspend driving licenses.
