UK Department for Work and Pensions expands benefit and apprenticeship support

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said that people receiving the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) at the higher rate of £80 per week will automatically qualify for a Blue Badge, a parking permit for those with mobility difficulties. Eligible claimants will also gain other concessions such as vehicle‑tax exemption, council‑tax reductions and a Disabled Persons Railcard.

In a separate announcement, the DWP unveiled a package aimed at boosting youth employment. From August, all eligible under‑25s will receive free apprenticeship training, and small‑ and medium‑size enterprises can claim up to £8,000 per new apprentice. A new bursary of up to £4,500 per household will support families on Universal Credit, removing a financial barrier that could otherwise discourage apprenticeships. The government targets the creation of 50,000 new youth apprenticeships and greater access to college places and technical training.
