UK deploys RAF Voyager to support Saudi air defenses
The United Kingdom is deploying a Royal Air Force (RAF) Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft to support Saudi Arabian air defenses against Houthi drone and missile attacks. Operating from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, the tanker will provide fuel to Saudi Eurofighter Typhoons and Panavia Tornados, allowing these jets to maintain longer patrols and extended time on station to intercept incoming threats.
This deployment, announced on September 22, 2026, marks the first known instance of foreign military assistance specifically directed at helping Saudi Arabia counter Houthi attacks. British officials, including Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard, have characterized the mission as “purely defensive” and time-limited, expected to last several weeks. The move is intended to protect UK national interests by addressing regional instability that threatens global trade and energy supplies.
