UK diesel prices approach historic highs amid inflation concerns

Diesel prices in the United Kingdom are approaching historic highs, with the average price reaching €2.28 per liter. Data from the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) indicates that diesel prices rose by nearly €0.14 per liter during September alone. The RAC warns that the previous record of €2.32 per liter could be broken in the coming days. Meanwhile, average petrol prices are approximately €2.01 per liter.

These rising fuel costs have contributed to an increase in inflation, which rose to 3.1% in August from 2.9% in July, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This economic shift has triggered political debate regarding cost-of-living relief.

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has proposed a 10p per liter reduction in fuel duty to provide immediate relief to households. The government previously extended a 5p per liter fuel duty cut until December 31, 2026, following energy price spikes linked to conflict in the Middle East. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed concern over the situation, noting that the government aims to mitigate cost-of-living pressures ahead of the October 28 budget.
