UK directors fined for building safety and environmental breaches

A Yorkshire-based building company, Adam’s Building Construction, and its director, Mohammed Adam Azhar, have been fined following a botched home extension in Bradford. The construction work was built over existing gas pipework and failed to reposition a boiler flue, which resulted in the flue discharging inside the extension. This created significant risks of gas leaks, fire, explosion, and carbon monoxide poisoning. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that the company ignored multiple warnings from local building control inspectors. Additionally, the company failed to comply with an Improvement Notice regarding construction phase plans.

In a separate matter, former director Oliver Kirkbride has been fined and ordered to perform unpaid work for repeated environmental breaches at a waste site in north Wales. Following a prosecution by Natural Resources Wales (NRW), Kirkbride pleaded guilty to offences involving the operation of a waste transfer site at Dee Bank Industrial Estate. The site had a history of exceeding waste quantities, accepting unauthorized hazardous waste, and maintaining inadequate drainage. Despite permit suspensions, waste activities continued, and two fires occurred at the site. Kirkbride was also found to have obstructed NRW officers during a search warrant execution.
