UK drivers over 70 urged to renew licences and face new eyesight checks

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a reminder for motorists aged 70 and over to renew their licences online at no cost. Drivers in this age group must renew every three years, unlike the ten‑year cycle for younger drivers. The DVLA’s social‑media message reads, “Are you 70 or over and due to renew your driving licence? Do it for free!”. The online service requires basic personal details and, once submitted, the licence should arrive within a week.

Separately, the Department for Transport is consulting on a proposal to make six mandatory eyesight examinations a condition of licence renewal for drivers over 70 in England. The suggested tests include retinoscopy, Snellen chart reading, ophthalmoscope inspection, slit‑lamp examination, visual‑field assessment and OCT scanning. The consultation is part of the government’s Road Safety Strategy aimed at reducing collision risk among older motorists.
