UK drivers risk fines over car insurance misconception
An estimated 4.5 million drivers in the UK are at risk of fines and penalty points due to a widespread misconception regarding car insurance coverage. Research by Tempcover indicates that many motorists wrongly believe their comprehensive insurance policies automatically allow them to drive vehicles they do not own.
A significant portion of drivers, approximately 37%, still believe in the ‘Driving Other Cars’ (DOC) extension. However, this clause was largely phased out in the 2000s. The study found that 44% of drivers had used a vehicle they did not own in the past year, with 23% doing so on a weekly basis for tasks such as running errands, emergencies, or holiday driving.
Experts warn that relying on outdated assumptions or misunderstanding insurance practices like ‘fronting’ can lead to roadside vehicle seizures, fines, or penalty points. The report notes that borrowing cars from friends, partners, or parents is common, but drivers are advised to secure standalone temporary insurance to ensure legal compliance.
