UK drivers warned by RAC about illegal dark sunglasses

The Royal Automobile Club (RAC) has issued a safety alert as the United Kingdom experiences a fourth summer heatwave. RAC policy officer Harriet Hernando cautioned that sunglasses rated as "category four" on the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) scale are illegal for driving because they let in only a tiny fraction of daylight, potentially compromising a driver’s vision. Under Section 96 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, driving with impaired eyesight can result in a fine and three penalty points.

The RAC recommends category three sunglasses for daytime driving, with category two also acceptable, while category one is intended for low‑sunlight conditions. Rule 94 of the Highway Code advises against using any tinted lenses that limit visibility, especially at night or in poor weather, as they may be considered careless or dangerous driving.
