UK drivers warned of parking fines at supermarkets and on roads

UK motorists are facing potential fines for common parking errors related to supermarket regulations and Highway Code rules.

Drivers using supermarket car parks, such as those at Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons, may be issued Parking Charge Notices (PCNs) of up to £100 if they leave their vehicles outside of store opening hours. These car parks are typically managed by private enforcement companies using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Experts urge drivers to carefully check signage before leaving their vehicles.

Additionally, drivers are warned of potential fines reaching £1,000 for violating Highway Code Rule 248. This rule prohibits parking on a road at night facing against the direction of traffic flow unless in a recognized parking space. The regulation is intended to ensure vehicle reflectors are visible to oncoming drivers. While the Highway Code is not law itself, many rules are legal requirements under the Roads Traffic Act, which can lead to prosecution, penalty points, or disqualification.
