UK DWP changes August 2026 benefit payment dates and tightens PIP overseas travel rules

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced that benefit payments falling on the August 31 bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the August 3 holiday in Scotland, will be paid on the preceding working day. The adjustment affects major payments such as the state pension, universal credit, pension credit, child benefit and disability benefits, impacting around 24 million claimants across the United Kingdom.

Separately, the DWP reminded Personal Independence Payment (PIP) recipients that any overseas travel lasting more than four weeks must be reported. Failure to notify the department can result in fines or suspension of payments. Claimants may travel abroad for up to 13 weeks without penalty, or up to 26 weeks for medical treatment, provided they inform the DWP of the dates, destination and purpose. The guidance also notes other circumstances that must be reported, such as hospitalisation or imprisonment.
