UK DWP granted new authority to revoke licences of benefit debtors

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been given new powers under the PAFER Act to remove driving licences from individuals who owe money to the benefits system. The measures are part of a crackdown on benefit fraud and aim to recover billions of pounds in lost funds. Officials will also be able to examine bank accounts and make direct withdrawals.

The licence bans apply initially to recipients of Universal Credit, Pension Credit and Employment and Support Allowance when debts exceed £1,000. Bans can be suspended if repayment terms are met, and licences will not be withdrawn where they are essential for work, such as for couriers or caretakers. Work and Pensions Minister for Transformation Andrew Western and Cabinet Office Minister Satvir Kaur said the moves are intended to protect taxpayers and ensure those who deliberately dodge debts are pursued.
