UK DWP raises state pension amount and pushes retirement age to 67

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced that state pension payments will rise to £1,930 per month for eligible recipients, taking effect in June 2026. Receivers whose payment day falls on a Wednesday in July will receive a double payment because the pension is paid on a four‑weekly schedule.

In parallel, the DWP is phasing in an increase to the state pension age, moving it to 67 for people born between 6 April 1960 and 5 June 1960. The increase began on 6 April 2026 and will be applied in one‑month increments until the full age of 67 is reached, with the process expected to finish by April 2028. Further plans call for the age to rise to 68 between 2044 and 2046 for later cohorts. Helen Morrissey of Hargreaves Lansdown explained, "If you are on the new state pension, then for every nine weeks you defer, you get an extra 1% state pension."
