UK DWP rolls out Winter Fuel Payment details and reviews PIP and hospital benefit rules

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) confirmed that nine million pensioners in England and Wales will receive the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026/27. Eligible individuals born on or before 27 June 1960 with annual incomes below £35,000 will automatically receive between £100 and £300 from November, with higher rates for those born before 28 September 1946.

Separately, the DWP faced calls to tighten Personal Independence Payment (PIP) eligibility after data showed almost 200,000 households with incomes over £100,000 receive the benefit, costing taxpayers £26 billion annually. Critics urged means‑testing to ensure support reaches those who need it most.

Guidance on PIP assessments outlined that claimants need 8‑11 points for the standard rate and 12 or more points for the enhanced rate across daily‑living and mobility components, covering a range of activities from preparing food to planning journeys.

The DWP also reminded pensioners that a 28‑day hospital stay can suspend or reduce benefits such as Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance and PIP, although the State Pension itself remains unaffected.
