UK economic outlook shows weak growth and mixed business sentiment
Economic forecasts for the United Kingdom indicate a period of weak growth and uncertainty. The CBI’s latest Growth Indicator report shows that while business pessimism is at its lowest level in nearly two years, momentum remains weak. Private sector activity is expected to fall in the coming months, with significant declines anticipated in consumer services and distribution sectors. CBI Deputy Chief Economist Alpesh Paleja noted that the outlook is mixed, with household-facing firms facing more difficult conditions due to subdued demand and intense cost pressures.
Complementing this, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) predicts that GDP growth will remain modest, forecasting 1.0% growth for both 2026 and 2027, before rising to 1.3% in 2028. The BCC highlights that business investment is expected to fall by 0.2% this year. Other economic indicators include a forecast for inflation to peak at 3.6% by the end of the year and unemployment to reach 5.4% in 2027. The BCC notes that while the economy showed more resilience in the first half of the year than expected, high energy and business costs continue to weigh on the long-term outlook.
