U.S. economy growth revised upward to 2.2% for second quarter

The United States economy demonstrated resilience in the second quarter of 2026, with real GDP growth revised upward to a 2.2% annual rate from an initial estimate of 1.5%. This growth was primarily driven by robust consumer spending, which increased at a 3.8% annual pace, and strong business investment, which rose by 9% (excluding housing), fueled largely by artificial intelligence infrastructure development.

While the upward revision was a positive surprise for economists, the overall growth figure was tempered by a 12.6% surge in imports. Additionally, consumer sentiment has reached a near 12.5-year low, as households face ongoing pressure from inflation and energy costs related to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

In Europe, the Czech economy grew by 1.8% year-on-year in the second quarter, though this was a slight downward revision from previous estimates. Meanwhile, the National Bank of Slovakia improved its GDP growth forecast for the year to 0.8%, citing lower inflation and stronger household consumption as key drivers.
