China inflation cools in July amid weak domestic demand
China's economic data for July 2026 indicates cooling inflation and mixed industrial signals. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.5% year-on-year, a slowdown from June's 1.0% increase and below the expected 0.8% growth rate. This decline was largely attributed to a reduction in gasoline price increases and falling food prices, particularly pork. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.9% year-on-year.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 3.5% year-on-year, down from 4.1% in June, marking its lowest level in three months. On a month-on-month basis, the PPI decreased by 0.7%. While the narrowing of PPI deflation suggests some industrial stabilization, manufacturers continue to face pressure from weak domestic demand and intense competition.
In terms of trade, China's export sector showed resilience, with dollar-denominated exports increasing 23.9% year-on-year. This growth was primarily driven by high-tech sectors, including AI-related technology, electric vehicles, and semiconductors. Conversely, imports rose 27.5% year-on-year. Despite strong export performance, the overall economic landscape is characterized by subdued domestic consumption and persistent deflationary concerns.
