UK electric vehicle market shows growth amid potential policy shifts

The United Kingdom's electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing significant growth, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for approximately 26% of the automotive market in September 2026. This figure places BEVs just two percentage points behind internal combustion engine (ICE)-only vehicles, which held a 28% market share.

Despite this momentum, the UK government is considering a potential policy U-turn regarding zero-emission vehicle mandates. While the long-term goal remains a transition to fully electric new cars and vans by 2035, current consultations suggest that the 2030 target—which requires 80% of new cars to be zero-emission—could be reduced to as low as 50%.

Analysis from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) suggests that weakening these targets could impact the nation's ability to meet carbon budgets and net-zero goals. However, current market data indicates high consumer interest, with 94% of EV drivers reporting savings and many expressing intent to purchase electric vehicles again due to the lower cost per mile compared to petrol and diesel.
