UK electricity grid investment plan targets economic growth
The Electricity Networks Sector Growth Plan, a joint initiative by the Energy Networks Association, BEAMA, the UK government, and Ofgem, outlines a strategy to invest £181bn in the UK’s electricity networks by 2035. According to the plan, this investment could unlock £58bn for the UK economy and support over 210,000 high-quality jobs.
In Wales, economic analysis from BiGGAR Economics suggests that a specific proposed transmission route through Mid Wales could unlock an additional £1.3 billion in spending with local businesses and support 540 long-term jobs. This route, identified as the Western MWNC option, would provide 3GW of additional connection capacity for onshore wind and solar projects, potentially generating £60 million annually in business rates and community benefits for Mid and North Wales.
