UK energy agencies plan major electricity grid upgrades

The Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) is collaborating with Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to upgrade the electricity transmission network. This initiative aims to increase capacity for renewable energy and improve system resilience as part of the Clean Power 2030 plan.

Much of the existing grid was constructed between the 1950s and 1970s for fossil fuel stations and is currently ill-equipped for modern electricity production. NESO has identified more than 80 necessary transmission projects to meet demand and reduce constraint costs.

Achieving these upgrades by 2030 presents significant challenges, including planning, supply chain, and system access risks. Delays in grid development could lead to increased costs for consumers and postpone the benefits of clean power as new generation connects before the infrastructure is ready.
