UK energy assistance: Grants and Warm Home Discounts available
Energy assistance programs are providing financial relief to households in the United Kingdom. The British Gas Energy Trust is offering an Energy Support Grant to eligible customers, including those not supplied by British Gas. Eligible households can receive up to £1,700 to help clear energy debt, with one recipient recently receiving £1,450 to settle electricity arrears and a £150 fuel voucher.
In Scotland, approximately 345,000 households are set to receive a £150 discount through the UK Government’s Warm Home Discount scheme this winter. This represents an increase of about 250,000 households compared to previous years. The scheme is designed to assist pensioners, low-income households, and vulnerable families.
Under updated rules, many Scottish households will now receive the rebate automatically, aligning the process more closely with England and Wales. Eligible recipients will receive letters by January 2027 informing them if the discount will be applied automatically or if they must contact a helpline by February 26, 2027, to provide additional information.
