UK energy bills face potential rises amid calls for government support

Energy supplier E.ON has proposed a three-point plan to address rising energy costs ahead of the upcoming government budget. The company is calling for the introduction of an Energy Price Protection payment to alleviate financial pressure on households and manage energy debt, which is projected to reach £7 billion by the end of the year. E.ON also urged the government to protect and accelerate the £15 billion Warm Homes Plan and develop strategies to make electricity more affordable through technologies like solar and batteries.

Forecasts indicate that energy bills could see significant increases in January. Cornwall Insight suggests the price cap could rise by 16%, bringing typical annual bills to approximately £1,999. Meanwhile, Bloomberg Economics has forecasted a potential 25% increase, which would raise the typical annual bill to roughly £2,150. Ofgem is expected to confirm the actual price cap for the January to March period on or before November 25.
