UK energy costs rise as households seek heating and savings
UK households face rising energy costs following a 4% increase in the Ofgem price cap on October 1, 2026. Cornwall Insight forecasts a further 16% rise on January 1, 2027, which could increase annual bills to approximately £1,999.
To manage costs, specialists suggest monitoring outdoor temperatures. Analysis of Met Office data indicates that October 20 is the typical date when Britain reaches a sustained chill, with temperatures expected to remain below 15°C for the rest of the year. Health officials recommend maintaining indoor temperatures of at least 18°C for vulnerable groups and between 16°C and 20°C for infants.
Several energy suppliers are offering incentives to reduce electricity consumption. British Gas provides cheaper electricity through its PeakSave scheme for smart meter users, including half-price electricity on certain Sundays. Octopus Energy offers rewards via its Octoplus programme, including Power Down sessions that allow customers to earn free electricity by reducing usage during peak periods.
