UK Energy Decarbonisation Plan Faces £40 billion Annual Cost by 2030

A report by the Prosperity Institute estimates that subsidies for wind, solar and nuclear power in the United Kingdom will rise from £11.8 billion this year to nearly £15 billion by 2030. The same analysis projects that the overall cost of decarbonising Britain’s energy network could reach about £40 billion per year for consumers and taxpayers by the end of the decade.

The findings come amid political debate, with Conservative minister Kemi Badenoch criticised for opposing renewables and favouring nuclear and high‑efficiency gas solutions. The report argues that the current mix of subsidies and grid upgrades may be financially burdensome while questioning the effectiveness of recent renewable investments.
