UK energy initiatives aim to accelerate clean energy grid connections

New initiatives are being launched to improve electricity network efficiency and accelerate the connection of clean energy projects in the United Kingdom.

In Wales, National Grid Electricity Distribution, Net Zero Industry Wales, and Celtic Freeport have established an innovation programme. The project aims to maximize existing network capacity to support industrial growth and decarbonization within the South Wales Industrial Cluster. One primary focus involves testing whether network-controlled batteries can manage supply and demand to create additional capacity, potentially allowing renewable energy projects and industrial customers to connect to the grid sooner.

Separately, UK Power Networks has recognized the team behind the ‘Connections Lab’ with an outstanding project award. This digital tool provides developers with free, self-service access to network modeling and data. The tool allows users to test the viability of renewable generation and battery storage connections before committing to formal studies. To date, the platform has supported over 200 companies in conducting nearly 4,000 studies, representing approximately 200GW of new connection capacity.
