UK energy price cap rises 13% in July 2026

The UK energy regulator Ofgem announced that the price cap for standard variable tariffs will increase on 1 July 2026, covering the period to 30 September 2026. The average annual dual‑fuel bill for households is expected to rise by £221, from £1,641 to £1,862 – a 13 % increase. Electricity prices are set to rise around 5 % while gas prices rise about 24 % because of higher wholesale gas costs linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

About 33 million households on standard variable tariffs will see the increase; roughly 40 % of customers on fixed‑rate deals are exempt. Ofgem advises consumers to consider fixed‑price deals, compare tariffs, or use direct‑debit discounts (around 8 %) to mitigate higher bills. The regulator stresses that energy supplies remain secure but notes the volatility in global markets will keep prices high for the rest of the year.
