UK energy price cap to rise 4% from October 1

Ofgem has confirmed that the energy price cap in the United Kingdom will increase by approximately 4% starting October 1. This change will raise the annual bill for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit from £1,663 to £1,723. Because the cap regulates unit rates and standing charges rather than total consumption, households with higher energy usage will see larger increases.

To mitigate rising costs, pensioners and other households are encouraged to check eligibility for the Warm Home Discount scheme, which provides a £150 credit toward electricity bills for qualifying residents. Additionally, the Winter Fuel Payment, ranging from £100 to £300, remains available for eligible individuals born on or before June 27, 1960.

Experts suggest inspecting homes for heat loss before winter arrives. Key warning signs include draughts around window frames, condensation trapped between double-glazing panes, and rooms that remain consistently colder than the rest of the house. Simple adjustments to heating schedules and controls can also help manage winter expenses.
