UK energy price cap to rise 4% on October 1
The energy price cap in England, Scotland, and Wales is set to rise by 4% on October 1, increasing the typical annual bill for direct debit customers from £1,663 to £1,723. This increase is driven by higher wholesale gas prices and volatile global markets.
More than four million households on standard variable tariffs that lack smart meters are being urged to submit manual meter readings by October 1. Failure to do so may result in suppliers using estimated readings, which could lead to customers being charged higher rates for energy consumed before the price cap increase took effect.
Experts suggest additional steps to mitigate rising costs, such as draught-proofing homes and adjusting thermostats. For example, lowering a thermostat from 22°C to 21°C and improving insulation could potentially save households significant amounts annually.
