UK energy transition focuses on nuclear reform and renewable expansion

The United Kingdom is undergoing a significant shift in its energy landscape, focusing on nuclear reform and renewable expansion to enhance energy security. At the Sizewell C project, efforts are underway to implement recommendations from the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce. These measures aim to reduce bureaucratic complexity and improve coordination to support new nuclear projects. Implementing these efficiencies at Sizewell C is estimated to identify opportunities worth between £300 million and £500 million through improved productivity and reduced risk.

Simultaneously, the UK’s clean-power transition is entering an infrastructure-intensive phase. Projections indicate that the country’s installed power capacity could nearly double between 2025 and 2035, with renewables expected to comprise 73% of the generation fleet. While offshore wind, solar, and onshore wind are central to this strategy, successful delivery depends on faster grid connections, transmission reinforcement, and market reforms to manage a more variable power system.
