UK engineering bodies urge climate adaptation for infrastructure

Major UK engineering bodies are calling for urgent action to modernize infrastructure in response to increasing climate risks. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has warned that current infrastructure is largely designed around historical weather patterns rather than the combined impact of extreme events like heatwaves, flooding, and storms.

IMechE emphasizes the need for smarter, connected systems and data monitoring to prevent a “domino effect,” where the failure of one system—such as the power network—triggers cascading disruptions in telecommunications, water supplies, and healthcare. The organization advocates for stress-testing infrastructure against future multi-hazard scenarios and mapping dependencies to identify single points of failure.

Simultaneously, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has urged the UK government to commission an independent economic review regarding climate adaptation. Citing the high costs of inaction, such as heatwave-related productivity losses and wildfire damage, the ICE recommends a whole-systems approach. This review would assess impacts across transport, water, and power networks over multiple timescales, from the short term to the year 2100, to better value resilience in investment and regulatory decisions.
