UK households urged to stockpile food amid record El Niño threat
UK Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle has urged British households to stockpile food and water to prepare for potential emergencies. This advice comes as a potentially record-breaking El Niño phenomenon develops in the tropical Pacific, which forecasters warn could be the largest in a millennium.
The Met Office predicts that this event could lead to wetter, stormier winters and more extreme storms in the UK, as well as drier summers. Globally, the phenomenon is expected to cause significant flooding in Asia and increased risks of wildfires and droughts in other regions.
Simultaneously, the National Audit Office (NAO) has warned that the UK's food supply chain is increasingly vulnerable to disruptions caused by extreme weather, climate change, cyber-attacks, and potential disease outbreaks. The watchdog criticized the government for being too reliant on the private sector to manage these risks and noted that UK households are currently less prepared for emergencies than those in several other European nations. The government is expected to unveil a national emergency preparedness strategy later this year.
