UK equine charities launch education series for feral pony ownership

A group of equine charities and professionals has launched a collaborative three-part education series to address the UK’s growing equine welfare crisis. Led by the British Horse Society (BHS), the initiative aims to prepare prospective owners for the realities of transitioning feral or semi-handled ponies from moorland environments into domestic settings.

The series includes events across Devon and Cornwall this autumn. One event, a ‘Walk and Talk’ on Dartmoor, will allow participants to observe herd dynamics and natural behaviors in Bellever Forest. Another session, the Feral Pony Preparation Clinic at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary near Ipplepen, will provide practical training on behavior, handling, feeding, and facility setup.

Partner organizations include the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, and The HUGS Foundation, working alongside veterinarians and behaviorists to ensure owners understand the physical and mental needs of these animals.
