UK-EU Gibraltar agreement enters into force

The UK-EU Gibraltar Agreement has entered into force, establishing a new framework for trade and movement between Gibraltar, Spain, and the European Union. A key feature of the deal is the removal of routine physical border controls at the land frontier between Gibraltar and Spain, effectively making the border fluid. Under this arrangement, Schengen immigration controls have transitioned to Gibraltar’s airport and port, involving Spanish officials and Frontex.

For businesses, the agreement aims to reduce delays for workers and streamline the movement of goods, potentially lowering administrative costs and improving supply chain resilience. Sectors such as financial services, tourism, and hospitality are expected to benefit from the increased certainty and improved access to labor and markets.

However, the shift has raised security concerns in Spain. The Guardia Civil has expressed apprehension regarding the new system, warning that security must not be compromised for the sake of speed. Spanish authorities are seeking greater clarity on protocols and responsibilities to ensure that the new arrangements do not create vulnerabilities for organized crime or illegal migration into the Schengen area.
