UK-EU relations face managed divergence in financial services

The relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union is characterized by managed divergence rather than the reconciliation suggested by recent diplomatic rhetoric. Despite efforts to reset ties, significant sectors are moving apart.

In the financial services sector, the UK has deliberately chosen regulatory autonomy over single-market access. Government sources confirmed that financial services will be excluded from regulatory alignment talks with Brussels by January 2026. This decision aims to allow the City of London to prioritize fintech experimentation and regulatory speed, though it follows the loss of passporting rights that previously allowed firms to serve the 27 EU member states from a single base.
