UK expands bowel cancer screening to all adults over 50

The National Health Service has confirmed that free home‑testing kits for bowel cancer will be sent to every person aged 50 to 74 in England, Wales and Scotland, aiming to boost the low participation rates among those in their early fifties. Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Clinical Director for Cancer, warned that "people have extremely busy lives but we are concerned about the low numbers of people in their 50s returning their bowel screening kits" and emphasized that early detection saves lives.

In Scotland, Public Health Minister Maree Todd has asked the UK National Screening Committee to review the current age threshold after research showed a marked rise in bowel cancer among under‑50s. She said, "If the UK NSC does not agree to a review, we will establish a pilot in Scotland to trial bowel cancer screening in younger people," highlighting growing concerns over early‑onset colorectal cancer across the UK.
