UK expands electric vehicle charging network, boosting accessibility and adding new sites in Wrexham

New Freedom of Information research by Vauxhall indicates the number of UK councils offering on‑street electric vehicle (EV) chargers adapted for drivers with accessibility needs has risen from 24 to 49 in a year, roughly doubling coverage. About 15% of on‑street chargers are now specifically adapted for disabled drivers and 14% meet the British Standards Institution’s PAS 1899:2022 accessibility guidance, though three‑quarters of councils still lack such provisions. Regional figures show 43 accessible chargers in the North West, 14 in Scotland, and 2,131 in London.

Separately, Wrexham Council plans further expansion of its public EV charging network, now operating more than 60 locations ranging from 7.4 kW fast chargers to 240 kW ultra‑rapid units across urban and rural sites. The council is offering a 20% discount to eligible residents and exploring pavement‑gully solutions for households without off‑street parking to increase accessibility for all drivers.
