UK expands 2026 flu vaccination eligibility and access

The UK is preparing for the autumn 2026 flu vaccination season, with several updates to eligibility and access. Starting 1 September 2026, pregnant women can access free flu vaccines through the NHS, a month ahead of the general programme. The NHS also recommends maternal vaccinations for whooping cough (pertussis) and RSV to protect newborns, as infants cannot be vaccinated against these diseases in their first weeks of life.

New changes for the 2026 season include expanded pharmacy access for children in clinical risk groups aged 2 to 18, starting 1 October 2026. Additionally, for the first time, individuals aged 16 and over who are experiencing homelessness, such as those in shelters or hostels, are included in the national flu programme.

General eligibility for the flu vaccine includes pregnant women, children aged 2 or 3, school-aged children, and various clinical risk groups. From 1 October 2026, the programme will extend to everyone aged 65 and adults in clinical risk groups.
