UK expands free rail travel to bereaved military families

Hundreds of bereaved military family members will be eligible for free rail travel during Remembrance weekend on 7-8 November. This initiative allows one next of kin of a service person who died while serving to travel free of charge on National Rail services to attend memorial services and commemorative events.

The program expands upon existing free travel offers for serving personnel and veterans. By removing financial barriers, the government aims to ensure that bereaved families can participate in national reflection and honor those who died in the Armed Forces.

Eligible family members must apply for free tickets through the Defence Medical Welfare Service by 16 October. Rail Minister Lord Hendy stated that the move is intended to ensure travel costs do not prevent families from standing alongside communities and veterans during these commemorations.
