UK FCA recovers most of fraud victims' losses from John Burford
John Burford, an 86‑year‑old former NASA scientist, was sentenced in September 2025 to two years in prison after defrauding more than 100 investors of about £1 million. The Financial Conduct Authority secured a confiscation order for £655,951 at Southwark Crown Court on 27 July 2026 and directed that the money be returned directly to the roughly 70 victims. Combined with earlier repayments, the FCA estimates that about 99 % of the original investments – nearly all of the £760 k lost – will be restored.
Steve Smart, executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA, said the action “sends a clear message that crime doesn’t pay”. The order also stipulates that if Burford fails to pay within three months, he could face a default prison sentence of up to five additional years.
