UK finance leaders expect tokenization to reshape banking

A survey by Lloyds Banking Group reveals that 71% of senior decision-makers at major UK financial institutions expect tokenization to reshape the financial services sector. The study, which polled 100 leaders across banks, insurers, and asset managers, indicates that the technology is transitioning from experimental pilots to a strategic business priority.

Key perceived benefits include faster payments and settlement, cited by 60% of respondents, and improved collateral and liquidity management, noted by 41%. Proponents argue that moving assets to digital infrastructure can increase capital efficiency by reducing liquidity trapped in transaction processes.

In related developments, Lloyds Banking Group, Archax, and Canton Network completed a transaction involving a tokenized deposit used to purchase a tokenized UK government bond. Additionally, a government-backed task force estimated that leadership in tokenized finance could contribute up to $44 billion to the UK's annual economic output by 2035. On an international level, UK and US treasuries have recommended forming a private-sector group to test cross-border uses of tokenized assets and are encouraging regulators to work toward a common approach.
