UK fire services increase capital spending on vehicles and equipment

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service announced a £24.42 million capital programme for 2026/27, more than double the previous year’s outlay. About £10.5 million is earmarked for new fire vehicles and £12.09 million for estate projects, with additional funding for carbon‑reduction measures and station upgrades.

The Sussex and Brighton Strategic Authority approved a £3.3 million contribution toward the purchase of twelve new fire appliances and eight 4×4 vehicles for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. The total cost for the twenty new vehicles is estimated at £4.8 million, with the county council covering chassis costs this year and the strategic authority assuming interest on borrowing and later payments.

Both programmes rely heavily on local reserves and borrowing, meaning taxpayers will shoulder most of the costs while the authorities aim to replace ageing fleets and improve infrastructure ahead of upcoming governance transitions.
