UK firms face deindustrialisation as rising costs delay net‑zero plans
A new Net Zero Reality Index released by decarbonisation platform SaveMoneyCutCarbon shows that rising energy and operating costs are eroding confidence in corporate sustainability programmes in Britain. Seventy‑nine percent of workers say higher costs are forcing companies to delay or scale back carbon‑reduction measures, while 66% view net‑zero targets as chiefly a reporting exercise. Sixty‑five percent would take sustainability more seriously if it delivered clear financial benefits, and 25% doubt their employers will meet net‑zero goals under current conditions. Almost a third (29%) observe a gap between public commitments and internal delivery.
Manufacturing bodies warn that these cost pressures could push the UK toward deindustrialisation, shifting the next phase of the industrial transition toward efficiency gains, cost reductions and measurable operational outcomes rather than ambition alone.
