UK fish and chip industry faces decline amid rising costs

New research from Seafish indicates a decline in the UK fish and chip sector, with approximately 7,210 specialist shops currently operating. This figure is notably lower than previous estimates of around 10,500 shops.

Independent operators are facing significant economic pressure due to rising costs for energy, oil, potatoes, and fish. Despite these challenges, Scotland maintains a robust fish and chip culture supported by its coastal fishing heritage. The region benefits from nutrient-rich waters ideal for haddock and cod, and major landing ports such as Peterhead, which is Europe’s largest fishing port for whitefish. The industry remains a vital employer for coastal communities, supporting fishermen, merchants, and processors.
