UK flooding triggers calls for improved urban drainage management

Heavy rainfall in the United Kingdom has triggered flash flooding in Birmingham and increased surface water risks across Worcestershire. In Birmingham, intense storms on 27 August overwhelmed urban drainage systems, leading the City Council to advise residents to avoid walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters.

Following these events, ACO Water Management has advocated for a surface-first approach to flood mitigation. The company suggests that instead of solely increasing pipe capacity, local authorities and developers should implement sustainable drainage systems—such as rain gardens, permeable surfaces, and attenuation systems—to intercept rainfall before it reaches sewers. They noted that recent heatwaves left ground unusually hard, causing water to run off rather than soak in.

Similarly, Worcestershire County Council has warned residents of increased flooding risks due to heavy downpours hitting ground that has been baked hard by a long, dry summer. The council is working on flood alleviation schemes and maintaining drainage infrastructure to improve community resilience against severe weather.
