UK fly‑tipping crisis hits London and Yorkshire communities

London recorded 481,088 fly‑tipping incidents in 2024/25, an 8% rise and the highest rate in England. Experts told the London Assembly that the problem stems from a mix of consumerist culture, inadequate waste‑management facilities, high tenant turnover, and language or digital barriers that leave many residents unable to access information or afford bulky‑waste collections. Dr Helen Holmes of the University of Manchester highlighted links between deprivation, short‑term rentals and the lack of clear disposal rules.

In Rotherham’s Eastwood area of Yorkshire, residents have complained for more than a decade about illegal dumping, rat infestations and anti‑social behaviour. Despite a Public Spaces Protection Order in place since 2019, enforcement is seen as weak and waste such as mattresses, TVs and household rubbish continues to be left on streets. Community members have formed a Facebook group to document the issue and call for stronger council action.
