UK food sector warns of inevitable price shocks

Over 100 organizations, including major retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, and Waitrose, have issued a warning regarding the fragility of the United Kingdom's food system. In a letter organized by the Food Foundation, industry leaders urged the government to prioritize food security alongside defense and energy by introducing a “Good Food Bill.”

The signatories warned that a significant food price shock is inevitable due to rising costs for farmers, climate change, and geopolitical tensions. Research from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit suggests food prices could be 50% higher by November than they were at the start of the 2021 cost-of-living crisis.

Additionally, a report from Tetra Pak indicates that 61% of food and drink businesses believe the UK is unprepared for the challenges of the next decade. The report emphasizes that food security will depend heavily on advances in manufacturing and processing to withstand trade disruptions, extreme weather, and energy costs. Tetra Pak has proposed a “Food Security Test” to ensure policymakers consider how new regulations impact food availability and stability.
