UK food trade deficit hits record high amid European economic shifts

Economic developments across Europe highlight significant fiscal and structural shifts. In the United Kingdom, a record food and beverage trade deficit of £21 billion has been recorded, the highest since 2000. This imbalance is attributed to Brexit consequences, Middle East conflicts, and American tariffs. Additionally, rising oil prices are increasing budgetary pressures for the UK government ahead of its budget announcement.

In Bulgaria, the government under Rumen Radev has proposed new tax laws targeting windfall profits from banks, telecommunications companies, insurance firms, and large food retailers. The proposal also includes a total ban on gambling advertisements to increase transparency and combat addiction. Meanwhile, Bulgaria is seeing growth in energy storage battery capacity and solar power expansion despite regional droughts.

In the energy sector, billionaire Todd Boehly, former co-owner of Chelsea FC, is reportedly working with U.S. government support and Persian Gulf investors to acquire the international assets of Lukoil. This potential deal includes Lukoil Neftochim Burgas in Bulgaria. On the commodities market, Brent crude oil prices have shown volatility, fluctuating around the $102-$103 per barrel range amid shifting Asian import trends.
